Bangladesh Pips US, UK in India Tourism Chart

Bangladesh has topped the tourist’s arrival chart in India, followed by the US and the UK. According to the latest figures released by the Ministry of Tourism, 7,32,105 Bangladeshis visited India in September 2014, which is 14.79 per cent of the total foreign tourist arrivals of 4.95 lakh in September. It is followed by the US (11.88 per cent) and the UK (8.33 per cent).

In the past two years, tourists arrival from Bangladesh is on the rise. In 2012, about 4,87,397 tourists visited India and it rose to 5,24,923 in 2013. In both these years Bangladesh was third in the list of source countries for foreign tourist arrivals to India consisting of 7.41 and 7.63 per cent respectively. During the period, the US and the UK topped the chart. 

Tourism experts point out that this is an unusual trend and needs to be studied. The surge in number of tourists from Bangladesh will not have any monetary benefit to the tourism sector as they are not likely to spend more here.

“In all probability these people come either for medical treatment or pilgrimage. Even though the number is large, in terms of tourism benefit, it stands negated. The major tourism markets for India are the US and the European countries. 

Interestingly, in my knowledge, India had not done any tourism promotional activities in Bangladesh,” said Jose Dominic,Managing Director, Casino Group and a tourism expert. Foreign tourist arrivals during September 2014 was 4.95 lakh as compared to 4.54 lakh in September last year and 4.12 lakh in September 2012. Forex earnings from tourism in September 2014 were Rs 8,810 crore compared to Rs 7,811 crore in September last year and Rs 6,652 crore in September 2012. India earned Rs 86,160 crore in January-September 2014 against Rs 76,369 crore in the same period a year ago.

Modi government shifts Arvind Mayaram to tourism ministry

Modi govt shifts out finance secretary Mayaram to tourism

In a surprise development, Union finance secretary Arvind Mayaram has been shunted out of the finance ministry and given a low-profile ministry of tourism. In orders issued on Wednesday, Mayaram, a 1978-batch IAS officer belonging to Rajasthan cadre, was made the tourism secretary in place of Parvez Dewan on his retirement at month end. In his place, Rajiv Mehrishi, an IAS officer of the same batch as Mayaram and from the same state, was appointed secretary, department of economic affairs in the ministry of finance. Ministry of finance has four secretaries - Economic Affairs, Expenditure, Revenue and Financial Services. The seniormost among the four is designated Finance Secretary.

Finance secretary Arvind Mayaram shifted to tourism ministry

Currently, Ratan P Watal, a 1978 batch IAS officer from Andhra Pradesh is expenditure secretary while 1980-batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre Gurdial Singh Sandhu is the financial services secretary. Shaktikanta Das, an IAS officer of 1980 batch from Tamil Nadu cadre, is revenue secretary. Mayaram's transfer was part of the first major secretary-level reshuffle undertaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. In all, 20 senior officials were transferred on Wednesday, many at the level of secretary.

Himachal Pradesh : Land of the Gods

The Land of Himachal Popularly known as the Devbhumi Land of the Gods, Himachal Pradesh is a beautiful hill state in India, nestles in north-west region of western Himalayas. 
The state is landlocked with the Tibetan plateau to the east, Jammu and Kashmir to the north, and the Punjab to the west. However, the state stands apart from its neighbours in terms of its sheer topographic diversity and breathtaking pristine natural beauty. 
From vast tracts of high-altitude Trans-Himalayan desert to dense green Deodar forests, from apple orchards to cultivated terraces, from snow capped high Himalayan mountain ranges to snow fed lakes and gushing rivers. 
 
Brief Socio-Political History of the State The earliest known inhabitants of the region were tribal called Dasas. Later, Aryans came and they assimilated in the tribes. In the later centuries, the hill chieftains accepted suzerainty of the Mauryan empire, the Kaushans, the Guptas and Kanuaj rulers. During the Mughal period, the Rajas of the hill states made some mutually agreed arrangements which governed their relations. In the 19th century, Ranjit Singh annexed/subjugated many of the states. 

When the British came, they defeated Gorkhas and entered into treaties with some Rajas and annexed the kingdoms of the others. The situation largely remained the same untill 1947. After Independence, 30 princely states of the area were united and Himachal Pradesh was formed on 15th April, 1948. On 1st November, 1966, certain areas belonging to Punjab were included in Himachal Pradesh. On 25th January, 1971, Himachal Pradesh was made a full-fledged State. The State is bordered by Jammu & Kashmir on North, Punjab on West, Haryana on South, Uttar Pradesh on South-East and China on the East. 

Summer: Packed with warm summers and the temperature Himachal never goes further than 27o Celsius. The summer duration here is from April to June. All essential for you is to lug some light lukewarm garments for the night. Monsoons: July to September is Himachal''s monsoon rendezvous. It is sensible not to visit Himachal during the monsoon season as the place is not too sociable for the period of heavy rain. The high temperature during monsoons jumps down noticeably and varies from 15o - 25o Celsius. 

Winters: The winter period is from November to mid- February. The main magnetism of winters is the snowfall at Himachal is especially during Christmas festivity in December.
